Travel to this beautiful medieval city-just a stone's throw from Paris

Chartres is located in the middle of the cornfields of Beauce, in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France and is built on a hill on the left bank of the Eure River. Its renowned medieval cathedral, The Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres which sits at the top of the hill, its two spires visible across the flat surrounding lands.

In World War II, the city suffered heavy damage by bombing.  During the battle of Chartres in August 1944,  The Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartreswas spared by an American Army officer who challenged the order to destroy this historic landmark.

Chartres is best known for its cathedral, the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres, which is considered one of the finest and best preserved Gothic cathedrals in France and in Europe.

This Gothic cathedral is in an exceptional state of preservation. The majority of the original stained glass windows survive intact, while the architecture has seen only minor changes since the early 13th century.


Admire numerous old residences in the old town of Chartres
 

The historical center of Chartres is  very well preserved with a lot of pleasant and charming pedestrian street traversed by rivers.

Walkers can admire numerous old residences in the old town, such as the 16th century Saumon house, the Voûte house and the houses in the Rue des Écuyers.

A stroll in the former tanners district along the River Eure lined with bridges should not be missed either. From the bridge one can see a beautiful view of the Saint-André Church.


The Fine art museum houses historical collections
 

Visitors can discover the beautiful terraced gardens of the former bishop's palace, which dominates the banks of the River Eure. In the ancient pope's palace, the Fine Art Museum houses collections of paintings, sculptures, art works and archaeological objects.


The Festival of Light is in September
 

Not far from the cathedral, the International Stained Glass Center is housed in the attic and the cellar of Loëns. It is dedicated to the art of stained glass window making and stained glass window restoration. As a permanent exhibition of ancient stained glass windows, the center also shows work by contemporary artists.

Every evening at nightfall, from April to September, Chartres' heritage treasures are lit with stunning illuminations that give the city a magical feel, culminating with the Festival of Light in September.
