Why Barbizon is the village of Impressionism

The charming village of Barbizon nestling on the edge of Fontainebleau forest used to be a simple village of woodcutters.
The village swiftly became a painter’s favorite and owes its fame to the 19th-century landscape painters such as Théodore Rousseau, Jean-Baptiste Corot, Charles-François Daubigny and Jean-François Millet who lived there between 1830 and 1870.

The artists appreciated the tranquility of this peaceful village and the beauty of the surrounding nature. This scene of a revolution changed the course of modern painting.

Théodore Rousseau and Jean-François Millet became founders of the famous Barbizon school (1830 to 1875), which is considered a precursor of Impressionism.

Today, Barbizon comprises a long main street which is lined with old studios converted into museums, art galleries, hotels and restaurants.
This typical, yet unique village is just 60 KM South of Paris France
